Congratulations College Grads!
You have made it through college and, contrary to popular belief, this will not be the only “best time in your life.” The real party is just getting started as you begin to unfold your education and your interests while moving forward to your first job.
Having coached and mentored thousands of college graduates, early careerists and my own kids, I have a few pieces of advice as you start your career – and the first one is, don’t listen to everyone. Seriously, don’t go crazy, instead choose a few people you trust and limit yourself to their guidance and mentorship.
Here are a few more ideas, including some great tips from my team:
• Soak it all in. Yes, you have a degree, and that’s great, but you’re not an expert, yet. Listen and learn as much as you can.
• Your time will come. Don’t rush it and don’t expect it. Raise your hand, volunteer, join committees. Get noticed for your actions.
• You don’t need to have everything figured out. Life and your career will have many twists and turns, enjoy the moment. -Megan Freeman
• Get out of your comfort zone and meet new people. Your first few jobs are just as much about the culture as the work. Make new friends. -Andrea Newman
• “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Live your own life, set your own goals, don’t compare yourself to others. Work hard, and good things will happen. -Julie Monti
• Enjoy the ride! The whole process can be daunting and overwhelming at times, lean into the unknown. -Eva Zoerhof
